Brian W. McCarthy, I

Brian William McCarthy of Rensselaer New York passed away peacefully on August 26, 2023, after a brief battle with liver cancer. He was surrounded by his sons, Brian William McCarthy II and Lane Robert McCarthy. 

Brian was born on September 9, 1945  in Troy, New York to Irish immigrants, Charles and Marion McCarthy. He attended Catholic Central High School where he met his ex-wife, Carol Catone and began his family.

Brian was known as a social, fun and charismatic man. He enjoyed the outdoors and delighted in sharing his interests with family and friends. He worked to live, instead of living to work, as an insurance salesman, a ski patroller at several resorts over the years, a wine steward, and a Trader Joe’s crew member where he could happily sport his collection of Hawaiian shirts. His hobbies included hiking (Yosemite being his favorite), visiting National parks, camping, skiing, whitewater rafting, sailing, kayaking, scuba diving, and lobstering primarily in the New England area. As he aged out of his adventures he settled into Maine and surrounded himself with movies, music, and mementos and keepsakes to remember his life by. 

Brian has now reunited with his parents and his brother, Charles, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his sons, Brian and Lane, their spouses, his 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Brian and Talene McCarthy of Belmont, MA and their children: Brian, Anoush and Sarina. Lane and Sandy McCarthy of Wynantskill, NY and their children: Nathan and Grace. Nathan and his wife Becky and their girls: Leah and Rose.

Services will be held at the Wynantskill Funeral Home located at 294 Whiteview Road, Wynantskill, NY on Thursday, August 31,2023 4pm -7pm. Cards are welcome at 22 Francis Drive, Wynantskill, NY 12198. Please help us celebrate Brian’s life by wearing a Hawaiian themed article of clothing and bring a memory to share.
