Floyd E. Smith, 96, passed on at the Van Rensselaer Manor on Sunday, December 17, 2017. Floyd was born in 1921 in Heath, Massachusetts to the late Paul and Edith Smith. He was the third youngest of nine children. His youngest brother Don, age 90, lives in Florida.
Floyd was a Dairy Farmer in Berlin, NY and then a Bus Driver for the Berlin Central School District. He was also self-employed cleaning and restoring floors.
Floyd was a people person who took great pleasure being with family and friends. He enjoyed gardening and was always up for a game of horseshoes. One of his greatest joys was playing the banjo. He played with family and friends and performed with numerous groups. He was an active member of the Tri-County Banjo Band until the age of 95.
Floyd was married to the late Mary Dame Smith for 57 years. He is survived by his children: Robert Smith; Sally (Peter) White; and, Kathleen (Wayne) D’Arcy; 13 Grandchildren; 24 Great Grandchildren; 4 Great Great Grandchildren; and, a host of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale, the Van Rensselaer Manor and Community Hospice for their compassionate care of Floyd. We’d also like to thank those of you who visited and sent cards. Those acts of kindness meant so much to him.
A Celebration of Floyd’s Life will be held at The First Reformed Church of Wynantskill, 413 Main Avenue, Wynantskill, NY 12198 at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Dawn Alpaugh officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
