Kenneth Earl Hughes, Sr

Kenneth Earl Hughes, Sr. passed peacefully on Tuesday, December 17, 2024.

Born in Troy, May 17, 1928, he was the son of the late Walter Hughes and Florence Hosford Hughes. A resident of the South Troy (Scotch Hill) and Wynantskill areas all his life, Ken graduated from Troy High School in 1946. 

Ken was a talented athlete who played three sports at Troy High School. His baseball skills garnered him invitations to tryouts for both the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs. Later he played for many years in the Troy area Semi-Pro Leagues. He was also manager of a semi-pro team. He coached Little League Baseball and enjoyed attending his sons’ and grandsons’ Little League, high school and college games.

Ken was employed for 44 years at Geier and Bluhm, a level manufacturing firm, and also served in the US Army, stationed in Germany.

Ken was predeceased by his beloved wife of 60 years, Shirley Edwards Hughes, his parents, and brother, Walter T. Hughes.

Ken enjoyed golfing with his brother and brothers-in-law. He always looked forward to family gatherings and picnics.

Ken spent summer days as the lifeguard while his wife, children and grandchildren enjoyed his pool, followed by dinner at the picnic table, playing board and card games with lots of love and laughter.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen (Mark) Wertel, two sons Kenneth (Michele) Hughes, Jr. and William (Maureen) Hughes; seven grandchildren, William (Kristine) Hughes, Jessica Wertel, Meghan Hughes, Katie Hughes, Zachary Hughes, Jacquelyn Wertel, Michael Hughes; and great-grandson Logan Hughes.

The Hughes family would like to thank Community Hospice, especially Paul, for the care shown to Ken and family.

Family and friends are invited and may call from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm with service at 12:00 pm all on Friday December 20, 2024 at the Wynantskill Funeral Home 294 Whiteview Road, Wynantskill. Burial with military honors will follow at Elmwood Hill Cemetery, Troy.
