Robert O. Demarest, 81, passed away on May 9, 2021 at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Watervliet, he was the son to the late Omer Demarest and Mary Vollmer Demarest and the loving husband to Ellen Hurley Demarest for 56 years.
Robert was a long time resident of Wynantskill and a graduate of Heatly High School in Green Island.
Robert served in the New York National Guard, in the Special Forces Unit as a Paratrooper in the Green Beret.
He worked for The New York State Assembly as a maintenance mechanic when he retired, but for most years of his life for Grand Union warehouse in Waterford. He also served as a Rensselaer County Deputy Sheriff.
Robert was an avid hunter since childhood. He enjoyed hunting, camping, yard work, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Watervliet Elks for over 40 years participating in the golf and dart leagues.
In addition to his wife Ellen, Robert is survived by his children Barbara (Shawn) Keough of Florida, Maryellen (Mickey) Carl of Wynantskill, David (Kimberly) Demarest of Wynantskill, Robert (Deborah) Demarest of Wynantskill, his grandchildren Andrew Leonard Jr., Christopher Leonard, Joseph Demarest, Samuel Demarest, and Jacob Demarest, his sister in laws Carole Demarest and Marilyn (late William) Mayo, his brother in laws Chriss Hurley and Michael (Deborah) Hurley, also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Robert was predeceased by his mother, father, and brother, Frederick Demarest.
Family and friends are invited and may call from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday May 14, 2021 at the Wynantskill Funeral Home, 294 Whiteview Road, Wynantskill. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm at funeral home.
