Theodore "Ted" Baldwin

January 8, 1933 ~ March 10, 2022 (age 89)

Obituary

WATERFORD, Theodore (Ted) Baldwin, of Bells Lane, died on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at Samaritan Hospital. Born in Troy, January 8, 1933. Ted was the son of the late Howard R. Baldwin and Geneva M. Oatman Baldwin Cioffi of Berlin.

Ted was a lifelong resident of the area and proud to be the oldest of 7 boys, known in the area as the “Baldwin Brothers”. He was known by many for his racing at Pine Bowl Speedway, Menands Speedway, and Lebanon Valley Speedway.

If you knew Ted, you knew he was world-renowned for his lack of patience, not holding back his opinion and a knack for telling it like it is. He always told you the truth even if it wasn’t what you wanted to hear.

It was the school of hard knocks and yes, we were told many times how he had to walk for miles in a blizzard to get to school or to bring the horse(s) to water.

With that said he was genuine to a fault, a pussy cat at heart (or lion) and yet he sugar-coated nothing.  His extensive vocabulary was more than highly proficient at knowing more curse words than most people learned in a lifetime.

He loved and was proud of his business, Ted Baldwin’s Gulf, on Spring Ave., in Troy, with Keith, Jeff and Todd as his “employees”, when child labor was legal and they should just be glad they had the opportunity to be learning from him, or so they were told. But honestly, he loved and appreciated them, more than words can say, and he considered them his best friends. He also really loved the many days and nights that were spent making memories and stories with his sons, brothers and friends. If this is making you reminisce, then you know you were one of the special people.

We will sadly miss the boisterous stories he would tell of the brothers growing up along with the stories of “the garage” and “the mountain”.

In addition to racing, Ted enjoyed his coins, antiques, and animals. He was an avid NASCAR fan, and a Western & War movie buff. However, his greatest treasures are those who called him “Pop Pop”.

Survivors include his beloved partner, of 30 years, Muriel (Mert) Oswald, of Waterford; his children, Ted (Joanna, Joanne, Michelle) Baldwin, Jr. of Troy, Todd Baldwin of Troy, Deb (Jeff) Reilly of Brunswick, Patty (Kurt) Dobkins of Ohio, Keith Luce who worked along-side of him, in his early years, and who he loved like a son, along with many grandchildren: Jessica, Jennifer and Nickolas Baldwin; Storm and Trish Baldwin; Samantha and Thane Reilly; Tara, Kyle, Paige and Haylee Dobkins; one brother, Jack of Florida; along with many nieces and nephews who take great pleasure in loving memories of their “Uncle Ted”.

He was predeceased by wives Jean (West), and Margaret (“Peggy” Ridgeway); his son Tad E. Baldwin; his brothers Howard (Inky), George, Lawrence, William and James; and his grand-daughter Ashley Rose.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Wynantskill Funeral Home on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Funeral services will on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. The family will be meeting at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Troy, NY.  In lieu of flowers, Ted would appreciate a donation, in his memory, to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (Mohawk Hudson Humane Society | Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (mohawkhumane.org).
